Protecting Your Home Against Insects
Summer is a wonderful time of the year that we all long for. But as pleasant has the season is, it does bring about a level of unpleasantness: insects. Do natural anti-repellents exist and how effective are they? Let's have a look.
It is needless to say that mosquito nets are a godsend, however, pesky little insects are still able to make their way into our homes and disturb a good night's sleep. Mosquitoes cannot bear the scent of citronella, lavender, geranium, lemon or vinegar. These fragrances can be used to keep mosquitoes at bay.
One easy solution could be to place a glass filled with water and a few tablespoons of vinegar, lemon juice, citronella or lavender on the windowsill.
Placing plants that will dispel insects is another alternative. Many insects detest the scent of geraniums.
Fancy candles? Then pour a few drops of neem oil or citronella on a previously burnt candle. By lighting the candle the scent is dispersed into the room that will drive off insects while simultaneously adding fragrance to the space. The candle is best placed near a window or door sill which will form a natural barrier between your home and the pests.
If you are indifferent to the scent of cloves, pricking half an onion with these spice wonders and placing it in a room can also help keep insects and mosquitoes out. Furthermore, onion juice helps alleviate swelling and burning sensations caused by insect bites.
Brew up some mint and basil, and add some parsley if you like. You'll need approximately 15 mint and basil leaves boiled in 100 ml of water. This nifty concoction can also be applied to the skin. Simply remove the leaves, apply to the skin and store in the refrigerator for future applications.
